Dr. Nivedita Dutta

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
I am a clinician–scientist with over 15 years of experience in dentistry and a PhD in Dental Material Science. Early in my career, I observed that dental materials—central to nearly every restorative and preventive procedure—were often used without robust scientific justification or standardized protocols, leading to variability in treatment outcomes and potential risks to patient safety.
This prompted me to pursue advanced research in material behaviour, where I gained deeper insight into the scientific foundations of material performance. However, it also revealed a broader systemic challenge: despite rapid advances in dental material research, most innovations do not reach routine clinical practice, leaving clinicians without structured, evidence-based decision support.
To address this gap, I entered the domains of biomedical ontology and knowledge representation. I have worked closely with ontology engineers on the development of the Dental Restorative Material Ontology (DrMO) and have contributed to the Oral Health and Disease (OHD) Ontology, creating a comprehensive extension for dental restoration materials.
My current work focuses on building an AI-enabled clinical decision-support system to bring structured evidence, product-level clarity, and standardized material knowledge directly to the point of care. My goal is to improve decision consistency, support clinicians, and strengthen the reliability of dental treatment outcomes.
